Game 2: Springfield Cardinals (Nick Additon) vs. Frisco RoughRiders (Martin Perez)

After a 6-2 win, Frisco prepares to take on the Springfield Cardinals in the second game of a three game set.

Game Time: 7:00 PM
Location: Dr. Pepper Ballpark (Frisco, TX)
Team Records: Frisco RoughRiders (1-0 T-1st in the Texas League South) vs. Springfield Cardinals (0-1 1 GB in the Texas League North)
Starting Pitchers: Nick Additon (0-0 0.00 ERA) vs. Martin Perez (0-0 0.00 ERA)
How they got there: Nick Additon was a 47th round pick in the 2006 draft... Martin Perez was signed as an international free agent in 2007.

What to Watch for on the Mound: Both pitchers made their Texas League debuts towards the end of 2009 and are now entering their second full season in AA... Martin Perez was ranked as the #1 prospect in the Texas Ranger's system by Baseball America entering 2011 and ranked #24 on their top 100 prospect list. Despite this being his 2nd full season with the Riders, Martin Perez turned only 20 years old on April 4th, making him the youngest player on Frisco's opening day roster for the second straight year. Perez struggled at times last year (5-8 5.96 ERA), but his last outing in the playoffs may have been his sharpest of the year, so that could be a sign of things to come... Like Perez, Additon struggled at times in 2010, and finished with a 9-6 record and 4.43 ERA with a 1.38 WHIP over 27 starts. A southpaw, Additon has a career ERA of 3.31 over 4 seasons in the minor leagues.

Killer B's: Engel Beltre, Joey Butler, and Michael Bianucci helped the Rider's to their first win of the 2011 season by going a combined 6 for 10 with 3 homeruns, a triple, 5 RBI, 5 runs, and 2 walks, while chipping in 2 steals as well... For his part as well, another B (Wilfredo Boscan) pitched 5 effective innings by giving up 2 runs (both on solo HR), 5 hits, 1 walk, and struck out 3 batters. He also got 8 groundballs to 4 flyballs and pitched 72 pitches, 49 of which were for strikes.

Blazing Bullpen: The bullpen figures to be maybe the best part of the Riders team in 2011 and they got off to a good start with Justin Miller and Beau Jones combining for 4 scoreless innings pitched. They gave up just 2 baserunners (both singles by Beau Jones) and struck out 2 batters.

Chasing 600: With a win on Opening Day, the Frisco RoughRiders are now only 2 wins away from 600 wins in franchise history. They opened in 2003 and won the Texas League championship in 2004. They have won over 80 games 3 times (2004, 2007, and 2008).
