Game 1: Springfield Cardinals (Scott Schneider) @ Frisco Roughriders (Wilfredo Boscan)

Opening Day!

Opponent: Springfield Cardinals (affiliate of the St. Louis Cardinals)
Time: 7:00
Location: Dr. Pepper Ballpark (Frisco, TX)
Starting Pitchers: Scott Schneider (0-0 0.00 ERA) vs. Wilfredo Boscan (0-0 0.00 ERA)
How they got there: Schneider was a 20th round pick in the 2009 draft... Wilfredo Boscan was signed as an International free agent in 2006

What to Watch for on the Mound: Both starting pitchers are making their AA debuts, so we will see if the pressures of facing AA competition will get to either pitcher. If it does, it will probably happen early...Despite struggling to some extent in the California League, which is notorious for being an offensive league, Wilfredo Boscan had a very good 3.25 Strikeout to Walk (K/BB) ratio and allowed less than a hit an inning at the meager age of 20. He turned 21 in October... Scott Schneider also commands the ball well as he has walked just 2.3 batters per 9 innings in 2 minor league seasons and holds a career 3.60 K/BB ratio.

What to Watch for at the Plate for the Riders: The Riders return the Ranger's minor league player of the year in outfielder Engel Beltre. The 21 year old lefty swinger has been known for his big upside and raw ability. In 2010 he started to show progress on turning the rawness into production as Beltre batted .300 with a .346 OBP, .410 SLG, 8 triples, and swiped 18 bases between A+ and AA... Also returning is Joey Butler, who's 143 hits in 2010 was the 5th most by a Frisco Roughrider in a single season... New to the offense will be third baseman Tommy Mendonca, a 2nd round pick by the Rangers in 2009. In high-A in 2010, Mendonca batted .248 with 10 homeruns and 26 doubles. He will turn 23 on Tuesday.

What to Watch for at the Plate for the Cardinals: Outfielder Aaron Luna returns to Springfield following a 2010 season where he batted .262 with an .870 OPS between AA and AAA. He walked 68 times to just 83 strikeouts... New to Springfield will be shortstop Ryan Jackson who while known for his great defense at shortstop, had a breakout 2010 season by batting .278 with a .359 OBP between A and A+... Also new to Springfield is first baseman Matt Adams. The 22 year old was a 23rd round pick out of little known Slippery Rock university. He will be skipping A+ to get to AA, however, after batting .310 with 41 doubles and 22 homeruns in A ball in 2010...
