Notes on an Off Day

Next Game: Tomorrow night at 7:00 PM at Dr. Pepper Ballpark vs. the Corpus Christi Hooks

Series Win: Frisco took 3 out of 4 from the Midland Rockhounds by winning 4-3 in 11 innings on Tuesday. It was their first road series win of the season and was their 2nd series win in a row.

Perez Starts Shaky, Ends Sharp: After getting off to a rough start in the 1st inning with over 30 pitches thrown, Perez was much sharper from the 2nd inning on out. He ended up going 6 shutout innings with 3 hits given up, 4 walks, and struck out 4 batters. Perez finished with 87 pitches and 52 strikes along with 9 groundouts to 2 flyouts. His 4th strikeout, which finished off Michael Spina to end the 6th, brought Perez to #10 on the list for most strikeouts in Frisco RoughRiders history. It was his 147th strikeout for Frisco, which surpassed A.J. Murray's 146. Perez could very easily get to 2nd on the list as he is just 21 strikeouts away from surpassing John Danks on the list. It's possible, but not probable, that Perez could reach Thomas Diamond's total. It would likely require another early part of next year, however, which is probably not something Martin Perez would want to see happen.

Bianucci Blasts #11: A day after hitting his 10th homerun of the season, Michael Bianucci hit his 10th homerun of the season in the 2nd inning of Tuesday's game. The solo homerun gave Frisco an early 1-0 lead. Bianucci finshed 2 for 5 with 2 RBI as well on the day. With 11 homeruns, Bianucci already surpassed the Frisco RoughRider's leaders from all of last season. Joey Butler and Andy Jenkins hit 10 homeruns last season and were the team leaders. Let me put that again, on May 10th, Bianucci has hit more homeruns than Butler and Jenkins did all of last season... which led the team. Combined with Tommy Mendonca's 9 homeruns, the Riders leading duo this year already has the same amount that last year's leading duo had. Bianucci has also put himself in good position to challenge Nate Gold's single season record of 34 homeruns, although that would require him to spend all of 2011 in Frisco.

Guilder Steals #7 and 31: Guilder Rodriguez stole his 7th base of the season in the win over Midland, which was his 31st stolen base of his Riders career. It tied him with Andy Beinbrink for 6th on the all time list. Next up are Anthony Webster and Jason Bourgeois at 33 stolen bases.

Another Bullpen Decision: After Justin Miller gave up 3 runs in the 8th inning, Ben Snyder pitched 3 2/3 innings to get the win for Frisco. The win brought the bullpen's record to 10-6, which gives them as many decisions (16) as the starting rotation (16).  Mike Perconte leads the bullpen and team with 3 wins, while Snyder tied Miller and Brigham with 2 wins.

Leonys Martin To Start in Frisco: The Texas Rangers announced on Tuesday that recently signed Cuban outfielder Leonys Martin will begin his pro baseball career in Frisco. Martin will start for Frisco on Friday and be active for tomorrow's game. The 22 year old Cuban outfielder officially signed a 5 year,$15.5 million deal with the Texas Rangers last week. It had been expected that Martin would go to Frisco to begin his career. It's possible that Martin could be a factor for the big league club at some point this season.

Game Score: We've started keeping track of the game scores of every starter for the 4 Texas Ranger's minor league teams this season. Martin Perez's start on Tuesday earned him a game score of 66. Used primarily in the big leagues, not everybody buys into game score as a great stat, however, it is just another stat to use and evaluate.

It's used for starting pitchers only, and each starting pitcher starts out with 50 points:

- Add 1 point for each out recorded or 3 for each inning completed.
- Add 2 points for every inning completed after 4 innings
- Add 1 point for each strikeout
- Subtract 2 points for each hit given up
- Subtract 4 points for each earned run given up
- Subtract 2 points for each unearned run given up
- Subtract 1 point for each walk given up

Overall here are the highs and lows of starting pitchers for the Frisco RoughRiders:

Wilfredo Boscan
High: 55 (4/18)
Low: 19 (4/12)

Martin Perez
High: 70 (4/19)
Low: 38 (5/5)

Jacob Brigham
High: 64 (5/1)
Low: 41 (4/21)

Miguel De Los Santos
High: 70 (4/27)
Low: 4   (5/2)

Carlos Pimentel
High: 65 (4/28)
Low: 22 (4/17)

Richard Bleier
High: 53 (5/9)
Low: 53 (5/9)

The high and low from the Texas Rangers minor league farm system are:

High: 83 (Robbie Erlin, 4/25)
Low: 1 (Michael Kirkman, 4/7)

In-N-Out Invades Frisco and Allen: In case you hadn't heard, In-N-Out Burger opened up in Frisco, TX and Allen, TX today. Under construction for a while now, they finally opened today. The In-N-Out in Frisco is not far from the Dr. Pepper Ballpark, at essentially 121 and Preston. It is a dangerous location for the Pressbox staff, but will be a welcomed addition to Frisco.

Around the Ranger's System:

Round Rock (AAA) gave up 3 runs in the 8th inning to fall to Tuscon 11-8. Neil Ramirez made the start for Round Rock and had his worst start to date. He gave up 6 hits, 4 walks, and 6 runs (5 earned) in 3 1/3 innings with 2 strikeouts. The bottom 3 hitters in Round Rock's lineup, Taylor Teagarden, Matt Kata, and Kevin Cash combined to go 7 for 10 with 4 walks while the rest of the lineup went 4 for 26 with 6 walks. Zach Phillips took the loss after giving up 2 hits, 1 walk, and 3 runs (2 earned) in 1 inning of relief.

Myrtle Beach (high-A) had their game with Kinston be postponed due to rain. They play a doubleheader today.

Hickory (low-A) lost a low scoring contest 3-1 at the Savannah Sand Gnats. Roman Mendez started for Hickory and took his first loss of the season. Mendez gave up 5 hits, 5 walks, and 3 runs (all earned) over 5 innings with 3 strikeouts. Christian Villanueva and Teodoro Martinez both went 2 for 4 at the plate for the Crawdads, while Josh Richmond added a 1 for 4 day with a double. The rest of the lineup went 0 for 20 with a walk, including Jurickson Profar's 0 for 3 day.

Minor League Performance of the Day:

On a day when Tommy Manzella hit for the cycle, Jake Odorizzi takes the performance of the day with an outstanding pitching performance. One of the players dealt from the Milwaukee Brewers to the Kansas City Royals in the trade that sent Zack Greinke to Milwaukee, Odorizzi showed why he can dominate games when he has his best stuff. In the Wilmington Blue Rock's 3-1 victory over the Salem Red Sox, Odorizzi gave up 1 hit, walked 3 batters, and struck out a career best 13 batters in 6 innings of shutout baseball. On the season, the 21 year old right handed pitcher is 3-0 with a 1.97 ERA now. He has struck out 51 batters to just 8 walks in 32 innings with just 22 hits given up. Odorizzi was taken 32nd overall in the 2008 draft and was listed as the best prospect in the Milwaukee Brewer's system by Baseball America before being traded to Kansas City.

As always...
